Hey Crafty Friends,
Thanks for joining me today on the Altenew Educators Blog hop for “Anything But A Card”!
You may have found me from a link on Terri Stokes post. So thanks for hopping along! Be sure to stop by Fiona Duff’s post as well.
Recently I recieved a gift of air dryed clay from a friend because she knew I was “crafty”! So I thought I would see what I could come up with, and violla, I made a flower vase! Well really a sort of flower cup! I didn’t have anything small that I could put just a few buds in from my rose bushes so I made this! (these ar not roses, but it gives you an idea!)
This will also be a gift to my mother in law for her birthday that is handmade. Since I usually pick the buds for her, this worked out perfect.Â
Trying Something New?
The most important thing about working with air dryed clay is to let it dry! Each application of a layer has to dry completely before another layer can be added.
I did not intend for this to be “perfect”. In fact I wanted it to look a bit shabby chic kinda thing. I used the Wild Flora Stamp and Die bundle along with the Garden Trellis Stencil for the background, and painted everything with acrylic paints. This is a tissue paper technique I’ve used before, and it works great for applying to items that need a varnish of some kind. Dye and alcohol inks will not hold up to the varnish.Â
It is the thought that counts!
Anyway, this turned out as a sweet gesture, and I’m sure I’ll get better using clay over time.

Thanks for stopping by today,
Rachael

What a lovely bud vase! I’ve never used clay (well, not successfully), but I think I’m going to get some of the air-dry clay and give this a try!

Fabulous flower pot!
I paint “kindness rocks” and it would be so neat to use stamps as a map for the acrylic paint on those. What was your process for putting the image onto the uneven surface?

What a lovely vase/cup for flowers. If it was perfect it would be just another thing someone bought, but this is special. Your first effort with air dried clay looks like a success to me!
Great job! I’m sure your mother-in-law will love it!
This is a wonderful project Rachel! Love the vintage look! I love playing with air dry clay and Altenew products, I am no expert but wanted to share I have tried coloring with Watercolors over air dry clay and had some “color bleed” when using a brush on varnish, but the issue diminishes when spraying on light coats of an acrylic coating. Thanks for the inspiration!
What a precious gift!❤️
